IndyKids Centerspread

IndyKids Centerspread
IndyKids spot illo
Lately I've been doing the center spreads for a free NYC children's newspaper called IndyKids. This piece is about children with disabilities and how they are able to do a lot of things despite their disability. Below that is another spot illo for the same page.

In other news: I'm back from tour with my band! It was so much fun. I didn't have a computer for almost 2 weeks or internet ( sometimes I got to check my email on an iphone). I planned on drawing on the off time but it was back to back shows and driving place to place, so, no time! But, I'll post up some recent doodles tomorrow from my post-tour chillout time here in Vermont. Today we went to a swimming hole and drove through the beautiful country-side and I made a lil' comic about it. Sooooooooooooo nice.

More stuff later!

Cheesefly

Cheesefly
I've been on the road or the recording studio or busy working on projects for a while so this is the first time I've had a chance to just sit down and draw just for the sake of drawing. I've gotta do more of it! I forget how many tiny stories begin this way. Like this one.... :)

Once upon a time I was sitting on a mushroom when I decided to grab a Cheesefly and bite it. It tasted pretty good so I've been biting them ever since. The End.

BOYBIRD STORY SKETCHES

boybird story sketches

Sketches of characters from a children's story I'm working on about a boy who wakes up as a bird. I love drawing animals and people looking into each others eyes. The top sketch is really weird; I love it! This story is really fresh so I'm still working on it all and it could take me a while. But, I want to try to post more often and I have a billion drawings and sketches to share, so, it's bloggy bloggin party.

I did, though, write a kids book the other evening called "It's Hooray Day!" and that is something I want to finish up pretty soon. I've got some basic sketches and ideas of the book in the works so hopefully you'll see it in action in Feb.

It's so exciting. I've always wanted to write and illustrate kids books but I just couldn't get the stories to come out of me, but lately, they've been popping out like spring buds. I'm also going to start a project with my friend Richard Agnew in London called JAM ON TOAST illustrating his incredibly wacky, super fun book of really bizarre short stories that I absolutely adore more than anything right now! They're like little pieces of delicious cakes for the brain. Here is one of them below:

"MY TOASTER HAS A BRAIN and knows exactly how I like my toast. It even knows when I’m going to be hungry and makes toast for me. The only problem with this is that I don’t always feel like eating toast every time I’m hungry, but don’t want to break my toaster’s heart by turning down its offerings. I know that this is silly and that my toaster doesn’t even have a heart but only has a brain. Even so, I still continue to eat mountains of toast so that I don’t offend my toaster..."

Exciting! :) So many things planned for this year...we'll see how they go.

P.S. If you've been reading my notes on facebook---this is a feed from my blog/website.

SLEEPY SKETCHES

sleepysketches
Oh, I've only had a few hours of sleep last night (working working working!) but I'm having trouble falling asleep even though I'm so super sleepy. Usually I just start to draw, whatever, anything and it usually represents how I'm feeling at the time. Ha. Like above--super sleepy wanna be sneaky sleepy sleepy sleep.

I've been doing a bunch of illustrations with this japanese calligraphy brush lately. I still have to upload them! Soooo many. I love how very subtle and soft the brush is--slow shading with ink.

WHISTLINBIRDBIKEDOGTHING

whistlebikebirddog
I drew this the day before I moved to Montreal when I was working on repainting that bike (info below in blog #2).

TODAY:
I think my fish is bolemic. I feed it and watch it eat but then I find little balls of food laying at the bottom of his bowl by the Marimo Moss Ball. HMMM!
But, his tail is healing up!

Nothing brand new to show for today (yet) because I was busy out and about in the city with Simon working on a commercial! I took some and was shot in some photographs for a show to be aired on Canadian equivalent of MTV here called MUSIC PLUS. Neat-o! It was so much fun!!!!!! I love randomness of creative projects, taking photographs, and walking around town with instruments in leather jackets lookin' all rock star. But, even if we're in the commerical, we have a giant question mark mask on our face-so you wouldn't know unless you were someone who recognized people by their hands. In one of the pictures I play drums and am wearing this giant baggy janitor uniform because I'm actually supposed to be a guy. Hahaha.
Photos up tomorrow! Sleepytown tonight and working party tomorrow. For some reason I feel really excited to go to sleep and dream. I think there are gonna be some goodies. Sleeping is like going to a movie theatre and buying tickets to a movie you know nothing about but it's indy and Sundance and probably really cool.

Love,
Christine

P.S. I love you Montreal: (SO MUCH! Today I walked around and rode bikes and it is just SO BEAUTIFUL here! All the little homes standing hand in hand with other homes and covered with their little flowers and their little special token of character with silver steeples and sun on the petals and sounds coming from this window, or that cat, and the CLOUDS are HUGE.)

MOMO CHU CHU

MOMO: peach (tree)
CHU CHU: sound of kissing

That is what it says in Japanese on this design. This style is a little different from what I usually do. It's kind of crafty, country: something you make babies clothes with.

I love this lil' squirrel dropping sweet peach kiss from a tree.

MOMO KISS VERSIONS

Different versions of MOMOKISS.

The one at the bottom of these is the first initial idea sketch and then the rest are the more stylized refined versions. BUT, you know what, I always love the very first one the best because it's the unknown, the explorer, the first child. It's creepier and strange and interesting. But, out of the second sketches, I don't know which one I like best. Some of them are a little too "soft" which is fine, I think they would be good for baby stuff, but at this second I like the really colorful versions, the very first two, because the colors are crazayyyy and don't make sense, and I like things that don't make sense but they feel good, like NONSENSE. :) What I like: color that is music with humor and wit swirled together, like a mix of people at a park wearing colorful clothing and balloons stuck in trees and tiny flowers blowing very very gently in the breeze.

These drawings were inspired by the desire to kiss peoples cheeks like a sweet peach or a soft blue note from a sleepy bird (or falling star fruit, oops, I forgot to draw those!)

I drew this concept sketch in a moleskine and wanted to get rid of the yellow parts but it didn't work out too well.

OH! Amazing stuff from yesterday:
Went to JP's (John-Pascale Saint Cyr [I love people's french names like my roomates name: John Francoise, but they always shorten it to : Jeff or JP, I don't know why, the original is beautiful!) place to listen to his remix of one my Symmetrix songs and then we added vocals to it and played around with other vocals for other musical things. OOOH! So fun! I love love love making music and I love to sing.
After that I went to Eric's place and we worked on animating stuff! We're going to take my drawings and make them come to life!!!
Both of these boys are in the band Sweet Mother Logic which is also AMAZING! I saw them the first time I came to Montreal and was overjoyed in their music, it was full of so much life, vibrant and fun carnival. It was so interesting how we met: through two separate people I knew who had both invited me to the show and were friends with the band and/or were participating. All very sweet and wonderful guys with lots of musical and artistic love. Tres bien.

Okay! No more art for today because tomorrow I'm waking up very early and working on 3 posters for different shows (Writer and The Leviathan Brothers, tour and shows, respectively, and a show a charity show in York, UK called For The Sake Of Song!) and then artwork for another sweet band called the The Los Dos Bros! WHOA! I just realized that all the bands are brothers or called brothers or are brothers and called brothers. That is fascinating. I should call my brother.

Tonight I'm designing clothes for the wives of major basketball players. I have to come up with a bunch of different ways to transform their jerseys into cute clothing for women. So random! Yah, love it!

Day by day, minute by minute, kiss by kiss, and every luscious heartbeat by heartbeat...

SOURIS>BABY FISH or STEVE>MARIMO

Souris

The second mouse is part cupcake/part mouse, the fifth is tossing a tasty pancake into his mouth. and I think the last one might be in drag.

I made this for my friend Souris. Her name is "mouse" in French. Her parents are Chinese. They wanted to name her after the year of the rat because that was the year she was born in, so they ended up with mouse. So cute. So so cute.

I was thinking. If I changed my birthday on my myspace page or facebook a few times a month, how many random people would tell me Happy Birthday? On my myspace art page I don't know too many of the people; I can honestly say that 98% of those people I haven't added to be my friend on my friend list and that I know maybe 3% of those people personally---but I like that people add me because they like my art and I love getting emails from them asking about it or just wanting to be my friend and talk! So sweet!. :) ANYWAY, when my birthday rolls around, it's so nice to get birthday wishes from a ton of people I don't even know. So thoughtful! So...what if I did an experiment to see how much Unbirthday Birthday love I can get?! Bwahahahaha! These are the diabolical thoughts that run through my mind. Haha.

I got a fish today! His name is
BABY FISH or STEVE
I can't decide. I haven't really named an animal in ages. Ever since I was little my bird was "Bird" my hamster was "Hamster" and when I had lots of hamsters at one point (they were making babies every week and then eating their heads off!! GROSS!) they were all named "Hamster". So...my Baby Sassy Fish in Venice is named BABY SASSY FISH, but I can't call this one that. He isn't that sassy, more mopey and sky. Part of his tail was eaten off, poor lil guy, but I love him so much!!! I'll probably have some drawing of my new BABY FISH or STEVE soon. I drew a picture of him tonight but I had a hard time making a beta look cute because they have funky fish face.
ALSO, I bought a friend for him! A MARIMO!! ( Japanese moss ball). This ball of moss cost the same amount as the fish! Isn't that crazy?! I always wanted one and my mom and I tried to make them when she came to visit me in Venice but ours always fell apart. They're super cool.

AH! I'm so tired but I have so much more to type about today but my brain is starting to loose it's ability to be more eloquent in my prose. My last sentence "They're super cool." is a prime example. ALTHOUGH, simple things can mean SO MUCH. To elaborate a little more---that sentence means: they're really fascinating "creatures" because they can only be found in a few places like Iceland and Japan and they're actually an Algae. They form communites under the water and sometimes float to the surface and float back. It's kinda like Transformers.

More info later...! :)

Well, I'm going to ZZZZ land right now.
LOVE!
Christine

RAINY

It's been unusually rainy here in Montreal. Such a drastic change from super sunny Venice to rainy rainytown Montreal. But, there are pockets of sun now and then and I definitely feel like I am in a different place. I keep forgetting that I am all the way across the country. Everywhere feels like home.

But, I love sunny weather. When it rains I start to feel sad, lonesome, and sleepy. The first couple of days I did a lot of sleeping. Today I walked around in the rain and it was nice at first, but then it started to get cold and old memories flooded into me. Actually, not the visual memories, but the feelings. A sort of melancholy tune.
sadwhenitrainsSLEEP and DREAMrainisnice

When I got home Simon had made pizza (from scratch: portabello, oyster, and coffee mushrooms on pesto with feta, some kind of frenchy cheese, and some other kind of cheese...with garlic---soooo gourmet yummy!) and we (Simon, Jean Francoise, and Simon's friend from Cairo) all sat down with little glasses of white wine and had a lovely meal. After that we ate some macaroons, had some coffee and they watched the Olympics while I played my guitar in the courtyard.

After working for most of the day on some design stuff, I took a long walk down St. Laurent. I was looking for a big cup and I asked the girl at the $1 store if they had any. She said it was so strange; 3 people had come in looking for large cups. It was cup day I guess! On the way home I stopped at a french bookstore and bought some interesting items. Colored pencils, a CD of lullabies from different countries, and a cute notebook to send to Meggy in MO. Fun!
MUSIC UPDATE: I think I have a harp player, definitely a banjo player and a keyboardist to play with me for my E.E. Cummings music project. Awesome.

Yah! Day 2 of BLOG. I want to try to update this every day with new art. It takes a lot of time, but, I should be more consistent! I'm always making stuff or experimenting with looks like this stuff above. (The Love, Christine signature logo is my actual signature from when I was in 5. Aww!)
STUFF I BOUGHT TODAY

Oh yeah, BODIES OF WATER was AWESOME. The show last night was great and in this dark, frenchy place called Orange something. I can't remember. But, I'm really glad I went. I'm still getting used to kissing on both cheeks frenchy, I always end up feeling smoochies on my head --- imagine a tornado of kisses and hair. I will get used to it. Sweet kisses on cheeks, always nice.

MONTREAL!

I've been here for a couple days and so far:
I've made a poster,
wrote a new song,
slept a lot and had really weird dreams (one of them I ran into John Mayer at a chic hotel by the beach and I was wearing all white and he made a joke about it, but then I looked at him and pointed out he was wearing all white too!),
given away a bunch of jellyfish comics,
walked around the city and bought cheap mangos and apples,
got asked if I wanted to be a nude model, sing backup for a country band, and play bass and sing for another band,
ate the city's best Pho,
sang songs for my roomies under the stars,
and last night decorated an umbrella with cats and cheese and wrote "cheese dream" in Korean all over it. ( Will post pix later!)

Right now there are rainbows all over my room because the sun is shining in from the courtyard garden through my little crystal I put in the window.
I'm off to climb the mountain now! More later.

Love,
Christine
