View from the Zoo Interview!

Julien Chung creates animal themed designs and illustrations for the giftware, home furnishings and publishing markets. His love of animals and the outdoors is reflected in the cheerful and whimsical nature of his trademark animal characters. Julien’s designs can be seen on products in gift shops in over fifty countries. He works with manufacturers, interior designers, publishers, art agencies, art directors and crafts people.

He also has a lil' blog called View From the Zoo where he interviews other artists that use a lot of animals in their work (like me) for example. Read a lil' interview here.

Thanks Julien! I always find it wonderful when other artists love their craft so much that they take the time to interview and feature artists they like too!

IndyKids Editorial

IndyKids Spread
Editorial for a kids magazine in NYC called IndyKids! This article was about corporate branding at a young age and the influence it has over children, their diets, and brand loyalty. I turned some of the kids into the major players. This is one of my first kids focused illustration work and I'm pretty stoked on it. I remember looking at all the magazines, books, comics/articles they'd give you in school when I was a kid and critiquing and admiring the illustration work. I mean, Dr. Suess was a personal hero of mine. In the 2nd grade I had to do a bibliography and read it to the class. Everyone else chose presidents or movie stars, but I chose Dr. Suess. I remember some kids laughing, but I really didn't care. I loved (still do) him. His artwork is amazing! I have a ton of kids books on the backburner for the day I finally have time/funding to sit down and do nothing but make them. I can't wait.

Ah! Been so busy lately that I haven't had time to update my blog. I had to put some illustration work on hold for a bit to do some recording for a lil' EP I'm working on, but I have a slew of projects to finish up early this week!

How are you? Doing well? It's starting to get hot here in LA. Although I miss Montreal terribly and everyone is blushing out east - the talk of this electric spring blooming blossoms is making me feel wanderlustful. Always. Don't you worry East, I've officially fallen in love with you and I promise to return soon - but first there is this world out there still beckoning. We'll see what happens--life is so interesting!

FLEET FOXES and CHRIS DARROW EDITORIALS

Fleet Foxes RGB
Chris Darrow
Editorials for the LA Record.
This year has been a pencil party! Since January I've fallen back in love with the pencil again. So fascinating to watch styles evolve. Once I thought I would never go back to pencil and now I'm back but with a more mature hand. Maybe I'll break away from pencil later this year and then come back to it again---who knows! I have no idea where these gusts of change come from and when but...it keeps things interesting at least.

AC INDIE APRIL POSTER

ACINDIE APRIL
Yay! My lil sock puppets I created originally for the fredflare ad (but didn't make it through) get to live on for AC Indie.
I wasn't giving up those fellas just yet!
So many things to put up here but I have to do it next week because I just got back from San Fran art directing a photoshoot this past week and looking for ghosts on the 14th floor of the Sir Francis Drake ( I didn't see any but my bathroom light did mysteriously go off a few times and when I told it to go back on, it did! Creepazoids!) and now I am jamming off to Mammoth to write music in the snow.

Fred Flare Illo

Fred Flare Final
Fred Flare Vs. 1
my illo on fred flare :)

A lil' ad I made for super sweets at Fred Flare! :) I was so happy to make it for them because they're so fun and their shop is full of all kinds of treats. The top is the final version--- the sock puppet was my first version but I think it looked a lil' too hobo (hahaha hobo sock puppets!), so we decided to amp up the cute/sweet factor and go with a St. Patty poodle.
Go buy some stuff!

OFF THE WOOKIE COMICS

It's that time of year again for some OFF THE WOOKIE comics for the SXSW Ice Cream Man Off The Wookie zine he puts out every year! I've been with it since the beginning ( 3 years ago) and it's great to watch it grow and expand. Every year he prints up thousands of these books to give away for free at SXSW while he passes out free Ice Cream. Amazing!

AC INDIE POSTER and SOME THINGS

AC INDIE march

MMmmm, mm, a can o party.

NEWS: Going back to Los Angeles and then to San Fran on Monday after being in Montreal for about 7 months! This sudden change is because I will be art directing ( as well as illustrating and designing) the new ad campaign for Rocketdog! Woohoo! Super exciting and fun and the people are great. Cant wait to see what unfolds the next month, or the next day! Im also working on the lookbook and photoshoot. This lil sweet company we are gonna make something really beautiful happen.
MORE NEWS: speaking of which, my computer DIED two nights ago! Which is kind of like not breathing anymore. For the first two days I was in shock. I had no idea what to do, but, I did manage to go to a bookstore and read a very enlightening 200 page book straight through in about an hour or two while waiting for the next thing to happen. So, now I think I might have to get a new one somehow or find someone to help me get it working again ( even though its less than a year old and I have 3 year apple care AND keyboard protector ANNDD a hard case protector over it!!!!) because I think it sucked in some moisture. Just a tiny drop from my desk and my life is scrambled eggs.Right now I am typing on a korean keyboard and using a really big old skool monitor and mac that my greatest roomie ever let me borrow so I could try to have my old life back. BUT the craziest thing happened last night! After finally getting the computer ready to do work, I start to work on some posters that were way over due and the moment I put pencil to paper----THE POWER WENT OUT in the house! I ended up drawing this poster and the one coming next BY CANDLE LIGHT! Hahahaha! I have no idea what is going on. Life, Life is nutso right now. But, still, pretty funny and I am lucky none of my clients are THAT mad at me right now, although,I feel pretty bad having them wait for me and wait on some projects until I can get the info off my harddrive. I am trying to do what I can while preparing to leave the city I love so much on top of it all.
Life life life! It is so pungent sometimes.

EVEN MORE NEWS: Another reason why I am returning to LA is to work on music in the studio with a producer I never met and musicians I dont know but am just going-to just do it-because it seems right and these are all things of love. I had a performance last weekend in Montreal! It was one of my best shows ever, I think. Just a small divey bar that I couldnt ask for anything better.

I am really excited about this poster and show above because its just the first in their monthly line ups and its in VENICE where I live and will be taking place the first day I move back into my lil studio nest that I miss so much. March 1st is going to be a spectacular day.

Perfect for my DAHG BLAGH!

That's Sherry reading a book in dog language with a dog. This book is about how to take care of dogs by listening to their body movements and how they bark. Like the language of dogs...:) Neato.

Anyway, I plan doing this cover in full colors but I wanted to post it up and share it in it's first stage.
