ALELA DIANE EDITORIAL

For the LA Record! In her interview she told a story about how she hit a bear in her Volvo. No one knows what happened to that bear. Going to her show Friday at Cafe du Nord in SanFran! I just happen to be here and she just happens to be playing and my friend I am staying with just happened to want to go to the show so I'm just happening to go too. Why not? Life: yes!
Also: I was in San Fran for a business day trip on Monday and decided to stay the week right before I had to hop on my plane ( last minute love!). I went to some thrift stores yesterday for clothes ( since I only had the dress I wore for my meeting and my computer) and I'm winging it all moment to moment which is exciting and a good lil' random life refreshmint to pop in my brainmouth. But, that means I'm missing some items like my phone charger!
So my phone is dead: please contact me through email! I'm still doing my work, just in the kitchens of friendly places.
Life: yes!

This year has been a pencil party! Since January I've fallen back in love with the pencil again. So fascinating to watch styles evolve. Once I thought I would never go back to pencil and now I'm back but with a more mature hand. Maybe I'll break away from pencil later this year and then come back to it again---who knows! I have no idea where these gusts of change come from and when but...it keeps things interesting at least.

BRIAN WILSON BEACH BOY for THE LA RECORD

One of the Beach Boys, all righttt! This one was such an honor to do! This will be blown up really big 14x14 and hopefully color spread in the next issue! I wanted to make it really pretty, intricate, and double him so he wasn't all alone ( in his interview he said that he always felt alone).

Sally washes up on a vinyl suitcase, she opens the green lid to reveal a plastic lid, beneath this black translucent cover, a round platter with a needle sliding along a grooved edge. With a flick of her wrist, the table spins easily, a circle within a circle within a circle. Crackling, a rhythm begins generating, Johnny ascends the stratosphere, starting at the knees, rising from black trenches. So Patti Smith actually did "Horses" then broke it down into "Gloria." With a hypnotic voice, she led us through a fable of unbearable lightness, sea horses, eyes, at the end of a hallway, a rhythm begins...a song about looking in the mirror and being like, HOLY SHIT. And horses. Looking square-face at a horse and saying, "Do you know how to pony?" Then we're in a field. "Johnny goes to the bottom and...then...he gets up," Patti freestyles. "Johnny doesn't like to be down too long." Johnny walks into a party looking for a bloody valentine, looks out the window and sees Gloria humping the parking meter. Sally imagines herself as Gloria and as Johnny. She feels existential about it, dragging along Patti's unraveling yarns, one boot up on the monitor, pushing waves off her thrusting hips with the back of her hands. "Teen Spirit," "Ain't It Strange," "Redondo Beach," "Free Money," and "In My Blakean Year" each took turns rousing the audience from their seats, but when Patti Smith began “Horses,” the crowd reacted as if she took her shirt off for a transcendental lap dance.
