LITTLE SCREAM/HOOF & HEEL poster

LITTLE SCREAM poster

Ooooh Yah, this is my band and we are playing in Brooklyn on Dec. 2nd with Little Scream! It's a totally new band with all new songs from our upcoming album. If you are in the hood, come out and say hi! Should be a great show!
I'm also going to stick around and check out the Brooklyn Comics Festival after.Fun weekend! :) I'm on a hunt for a Japanese bookstore that sells this wonderful illustration magazine called MOE, and I'm going to pop into some cool little book shops here and there ( do you have a favorite?). Any suggestions of some things to do/see while I'm in NYC? THANKS! :)

ABBOT KINNEY FESTIVAL POSTER

ABBOT KINNEYFESTIVAL 27

Wow, I haven't updated in a while! I've been pretty busy working on some design and illustration projects. I've also been feeling a bit under the weather lately PLUS all this pre-spring rain gives me the non-creative blues. But to brighten things up a bit, here is an entry for a contest I created that is summery sun and cheer based on the time I lived in Venice Beach. This festival is located a block away from where I used to have my little beach nest/home for a while, so, I thought I'd create a poster made up of my favorite memories: almost every day I skateboarded around the boardwalk and abbot kinney, dog watched ( they make me laugh so much!), and stare out at the ocean speckled with surfers and sailboats ( I loved looking at the sailboats on the horizon and on the weekends the ocean would be full of little boats zipping about). Of course I had to create the classic Venice Beach Body Builder - as dog - in there too. Its from a memory of a body builder with a little skateboarding pomeranian ( shaved to look like a lion) skating up and down the boardwalk. The boardwalk was/is a crazy, dirty, and eclectic place which was entertaining at times, BUT I loved the very quiet spots in Venice the most: the pungent walkways full of backyard blooming gardens ( by my studio there was a tiny garden with a little peach tree we would pluck tiny peaches from ), the purple/magenta night sky littered with little twinkly planes going in every direction ( like a sci-fi novel) , the endless day/night ocean/darkness, the hills and the homes, the flowers and the hummingbirds, the beach in the early morning when no one was around except for the seagulls, the sea, and the sounds of the waves and the wind blowing through the palm trees late at night when everyone was finally asleep. I feel really lucky to have had lived right next to the beach, since growing up in the middle of the states ( Missouri) I always looked toward the setting sun wishing it was descending into the sea ( instead it dipped into the crackling oak trees). L.A. was an endless summer, which was nice but I felt like I lost track of time, how did 4 years pass in one single summer? Well, now I'm living in the East Coast making up for all my lost seasons, haha. At times it can be rough, but, growing up with seasons, it feels right to me. Sorta. I can't deny that late spring/summer/ and early fall are my favorite times of the year because I can just hop out of bed, toss on a dress, and be outside quickly - free and unburdened.

Unfortunately I didn't win this contest, but, some of my imagery might be used in the marketing anyway and I'm glad I created this poster because it is a little more complex than some of my other work which made it a bit of a challenge! And I DO love challenges. :)

DUZHEKNEW POSTER

DUZHEKNEW poster
:)

This poster pays secret homage/prayers to Japan (I'm half Japanese, so, I'm thinkin' bout my family as well).

The doughnut is actually a Daruma Doll. You make a wish and paint one eye in and then a year later you paint the other eye in, which is the reason why it only has one eye. There is a little crane too ( 1,000 cranes make wishes come true, hence LARGE eye) and the dog is wearing little Japanese Geta sandals.

WHITE RABBITS AND THE HOOF AND THE HEEL POSTER

WHITE RABBITS and THE HOOF AND THE HEEL POSTER
WHITE RABBITS and THE HOOF AND THE HEEL POSTER
I couldn't decide which one I liked better. I like the grey best, but the orange pops and creates more attention. Both of them say different things with their colors.

It's interesting working with this form of art. I love the idea that I'm creating not only artwork, but illustration and typography for advertising as well. I have to make sure it stands out enough to be seen while at the same time sticking to my aesthetic beliefs and basic/intrinsic design style. When I make my posters, I usually create two posters, and normally I make my final decision on the poster that will stand out the most, attracting the most viewers. BUT, lately I've been posting up two versions and taking a poll on my facebook pages (personal and artist) as to which one people are attracted to and why. It's fascinating to see how people react to the colors.

This blog automatically feeds to my facebook pages, so, thanks everyone for participating!:)

CALIFORNIAN/WALK/BIG WHUP RADIO FREE SILVERLAKE POSTER

CALIFORNIAN/WALK/BIG WHUP POSTERCALIFORNIAN/WALK/BIG WHUP POSTER
By the way, I took a VOTE on my facebook pages and PINK was the most popular. I like it too, but it was my first time using a gradient background, so I'm a little weary of it as well ( hence the flat blue option). Still...I think the pink feels happier. :) Excited to be making a poster for Radio Free Silverlake again. I made posters for them for over a year, they were up all over LA, until the promoter/founder, Joe Fielder, moved to Boston. But, he is sponsoring from afar...hopefully there will be more in the works! The shows were always great fun and the bands were excellent.

HOW I (usually) MAKE MY POSTERS...

POSTER TUTORIAL!
If you have trouble reading it, here is the text below. :)

First(1), I sketch out my ideas which are usually based off of things that that make me happy. I think dogs and elephants doing something a human would do is funny, and food with eyes always makes me laugh. Sometimes the band names inspire me, sometimes the music, sometimes whatever is on my mind at the time. In this case, the fella who asked me to do the poster is also in the band PIZZA! So, I wanted to pay a secret ( but not anymore!) homage to the band. And, I kind of love pizza too
(umm...I have a book called Pizza Doing Stuff!). Spring is in the air here in Montreal, so I wanted trees with new flowers and a light happy feel to it. Sometimes I get distracted and start drawing something else(2), but that usually branches off later on to become a different project ( like an elephant crying while eating pizza, which will become a comic about an elephant crying until it eats a slice of pizza and it makes him feel better. But, after he finishes it, he looks over to see the rest of the pizza crying...oh life, how bittersweet you are! ).

Then, after I finalize my idea, I work out how the text will fit into the image (3) and get to drawing for realz. I usually do it in one take(4) with a few erasing here and there. Sometimes I use a light-box and draw the text on a different sheet (5). Sometimes I do it all at once.

So, after that I scan it all in, clean it up, make minor adjustments, and then flatten it to create one image in Photoshop (6).

After that, I start to color it little by little (7)and then... Finally,I add the background color (8) and VOILA done!
